3.1 What is Assessment?

Assessment is the process by which learner achievement is measured in relation to standards of knowledge, skills and competence. This process enables successful learners to receive an award.

In relation to QQI Awards, there are six categories of assessment techniques:

  1. Assignment
  2. Project
  3. Portfolio
  4. Skills Demonstration
  5. Examination
  6. Learner Record

3.2 How is my learning assessed?

Further Education and Training awards are assessed by criterion reference, which means that learning is assessed against a set of criteria to be achieved. The driving test is a good example of a criterion-referenced assessment. The standards of knowledge, skill and competence are specified in the Award Specification and learners either reach the standard or fail to do so.

Workplace Assessments

You may be required to complete a Work Experience module as part of your course. Information on course requirements will be discussed at Learner Induction and Tutors will guide you to resources for securing Work Experience placements. Additional information on policies and procedures related to Work Experience can be found in Section 5 of the QA Manual.

One of the responsibilities of the Workplace Supervisors as part of the Work Experience module is to assess and rate your performance under a number of stated criteria. They then complete the Work Placement Supervisor Report using the template provided by your tutor.

Your tutor will brief you in advance of the assessment. Your tutor will review the completed Workplace Supervisor Reports submitted by your Workplace Supervisor, countersign them and may comment on them. We make the completed reports available to an external authenticator who reviews a sample of the reports.
