Assessment Briefs should contain instructions on the activity or task which enables the learner to produce evidence for assessment. The assessment instrument is based on the assessment technique for the award. The Module Descriptor details exactly the techniques to be used to assess the learning outcomes. You should ensure that the portfolios of evidence contain exactly what is specified by the Module Descriptor. Your Assessment Brief should provide clear instructions on the task and allow the learners to produce enough visible evidence to show they have achieved the learning outcomes.
Before writing the Assessment Brief you should review the following in the Module Descriptor:
Learning Outcomes for the award These can be found in Section 11(b) of the Module Descriptor:... Mapping of Learning Outcomes to Assessment Techniques
In order to ensure that the learner is facilitated to demonstrate the achievement of all learning outcomes from the component specification; each learning outcome is mapped to an assessment technique(s). This mapping should not restrict you from taking an integrated approach to the assessment.
The Assessment Requirements These can be found in Section 11 (c) of the Module Descriptor - Guidelines for Assessment Activities
The Performance/Assessment Criteria for the Award These can be found in Section 11 (c) of the Module Descriptor - Guidelines for Assessment Criteria
Grading Criteria for Levels 5 - 6 These can be found in Section 12 of the Module Descriptor - Grading - Assessment Criteria
Word Count Guidelines These are approximate and very much dependent on the module you are delivering. Each of the guidelines below relate to around 50% of the overall assessment at each QQI level.
Level 5 – 800-1500 Words(50%)
Level 6 - 2000-2500 Words (50%)
These word limits are a guide only for written assessments such as essays, reports, projects and so on and do not refer to skills demonstrations. The tutor needs to consider the volume of work allocated to each candidate reflects these suggested word counts at each QQI level. The word count should be evident in the brief.
