- All Sections
- You need to prepare in advance a marking scheme for each brief which should illustrate clearly the breakdown of grades allocated for each element.
- Mark the candidate's evidence according to the assessment criteria outlined in the module and the pre-prepared marking scheme
- Mark the candidate's work clearly (there should be marks, comments, etc. on the actual evidence, or a note showing where candidates gained/lost marks if evidence is not paper-based)
- Mark skills demonstrations using assessment criteria and, where appropriate, supporting evidence as outlined in the module descriptor
- Ensure that marking calculations are accurate
- All marks should be transferred from the brief and marking scheme sheet to the Learner Marking Sheet.
Developing a Marking Scheme
- The tutor needs to ensure that the marking scheme provides clarity for the student in relation to the required assessed criteria
- The marks allocated to each section of assessed work needs to mirror the marks outlined on the learner marking sheet in the module descriptor
- The marks allocated in a marking scheme need to reflect the elements of the assessment that deal with description, understanding and application with a graduated mark being allocated from description (lower mark) to application (higher mark)
- The marks allocated in a marking scheme needs to be linked to the different QQI grading band requirements.
When devising a Marking Scheme tutors should refer to:
- The assessment guidelines in the module descriptor
- The learner marking sheet in the module descriptor
The assessment criteria listed in the marking sheet in the module descriptor are broad guidelines as to how marks are to be allocated therefore in devising a marking scheme you must expand on these criteria.
A marking scheme should identify per brief:
- Marks allocated to each assessment criterion
- Subtotals
